At the Ayaterra Center we work with Ayahuasca in a healing context, please find more about our healing approach.
Side Effects of Ayahuasca
Ayahuasca is a powerful plant-based medicine traditionally used by Amazonian shamans for spiritual healing and self-discovery. While many participants report profound insights, emotional release, and spiritual awakening, the experience can also bring intense physical and psychological effects.
How Does Ayahuasca Make You Feel?
Ayahuasca can trigger a wide range of emotional, physical, and spiritual sensations:
A deep sense of connection with nature, the universe, and oneself
Intense emotions such as love, empathy, joy, or sadness
Visual and auditory visions, sometimes involving animals, gods, or symbolic images
A feeling of spiritual awakening and expanded consciousness
However, these effects vary for each person and can range from euphoric to challenging depending on your intentions and mindset.
What Happens to You After Ayahuasca? 🌿
After the ceremony, many people report:
A sense of clarity and emotional release
Reconnection with personal goals and relationships
Feeling lighter, calmer, and more focused
Increased self-awareness and a greater sense of purpose
Some participants, however, may feel emotionally drained or need time to process their experiences, which is completely normal.
How Long Do Ayahuasca Effects Last?
The main effects usually start 30 to 40 minutes after drinking the brew and last 4 to 6 hours. However, the emotional and spiritual insights gained can last days, weeks, or even a lifetime.
Does Ayahuasca Change You Permanently?
Yes, for many people, ayahuasca can be life-changing. It may help:
Release emotional trauma
Shift limiting beliefs
Enhance self-love and empathy
Inspire personal growth and spiritual awakening
However, permanent change depends on how you integrate the lessons into your daily life after the retreat.
What Happens to Your Brain on Ayahuasca?
Ayahuasca contains DMT (dimethyltryptamine), a natural psychoactive compound that:
Activates serotonin receptors, affecting mood and perception
Increases connectivity between brain regions, enabling new insights
Can lead to vivid visions and altered states of consciousness
Recent studies suggest that ayahuasca may help rewire negative thought patterns and reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, and PTSD when used responsibly.
How Long Does It Take for Ayahuasca to Leave the Body?
Ayahuasca typically clears from your bloodstream within 24 hours, but traces of DMT may remain detectable for up to 2 to 3 days depending on your metabolism.
However, the mental and emotional effects can persist much longer as part of your integration process.
What Is the Purging After Ayahuasca?
Purging is a natural cleansing process and an essential part of many ayahuasca ceremonies. It may involve:
Vomiting 🤮
Diarrhea 💧
Sweating or shaking 😓
Crying or emotional release 😢
Shamans believe purging helps remove negative energies, toxins, and emotional blockages, allowing for deeper healing. While uncomfortable, many participants describe it as liberating and transformative.

Maria LVerified The experience couldn’t be any better!! Life changing!! Me and my husband had a very profound Ayahuasca experience recently with Ayaterra Center. Master Shaman and Andres were extremely caring and attentive throughout the whole intense experience. They created a very calm and caring atmosphere which allowed us to get the deepest, safe and life changing experience!! We are so grateful for choosing Ayaterra!!🙏🙏🙏❤️ NicVerified Best ayahuasca experience ever Did a one day ayahuasca ceremony coupled with a few Andean ceremonies. It was the best experience ever. Felt reborn. Andres, the nurse and the 2 master shamans were so helpful and positive. Words can’t describe the experience but recommend those going for ayahuasca to go with Ayaterra. Pamela NVerified Worth Trying Was eager to try this. I stumbled upon their website and found a wealth of information which really convinced that they knew what they were offering. From the first interaction itself, Andres was very courteous and helpful. We did the short 5 hours session and it was quite soul awakening. James DexterVerified Reccomended An eye opening experience. The shaman was incredibly knowledgable and guieded me through the whole process efficiently. It was a closer connection to the other world. Monica PVerified Amazing It was an incredible experience. The Shaman was very attentive and knowledgable. Andres did an excellent job in coordinating as well. Well worth it. Steve BrayantVerified Safe and Reliable It was a very nice experience. Thanks a lot Andres for your detailed talk which really ensured that i was in safe hands. mariaalexalontocVerified Safe Very safe and total profesionals. As a solo female traveller i was quite unsure of travelling to Peru at first and it was quite pleasant. I was then somewhat unsure of soing Ayahuasca and Ayaterra guys convinced me to be a part of the ceremony which was very professionally organised and took away all my worries. Andres is truly a gem of a person and I can highly reccomend Ayahuasca with Ayaterra. Sreeram HariharanVerified Exceptional A wonderful and rejuvenating experience. I wasn’t quite sure of the whole Ayahuasca thing. I did read many articles online but still was somewhat unsure of doing this. Things really changed after my brief meeting with Andres. He explained even the minor part of the process and was assuring. Aya Terra team was constantly in touch with me before the ceremony and were guiding on preparing for my Ayahuasca ritual. On the night of the ceremony, the priest spoke with me (there was a translator too) and enquirer if I had any physical or mental ailments that I would like to work on. I did open up to him. It was somewhat an emotional journey all the way through. However, as the sun rose and the effects of the Ayahuasca started fading away, I really sensed a new beginning. It was certainly worth it. Thanks a lot Andres and the whole Ayaterra crew for such a rejuvenating experience.
