08:35 – Welcome at Ayaterra Center & Facility Orientation

Upon arrival, you will be warmly welcomed by the Ayaterra staff. We will introduce you to our retreat center, ceremonial areas, and resting spaces so you can feel comfortable, safe, and connected to the environment where your San Pedro retreat will take place.

08:45 – Introduction Meeting with Staff & Andean Masters (Maestros)

We begin with an opening meeting where you will meet the shamans (Maestros) and support team. During this session, we explain the flow of the retreat, the ceremonies included, and important guidance on intention, preparation, and how to approach the experience with respect and openness.

09:30 – Ceremony for the Unification of the Andean Elements (with Coca Leaves)

This traditional Andean opening ritual is performed to harmonize your energy with the natural and spiritual elements of the Andes. Through the sacred use of coca leaves, we ask for protection, guidance, and permission to begin the healing journey.

09:50 – Kuti Ceremony (Energetic Alignment) with an Andean Shaman

The Kuti ceremony is an Andean energetic alignment ritual intended to help clear, balance, and prepare your energy before the Wachuma ceremony. This process supports grounding, emotional openness, and a more aligned ceremonial experience.

10:20 – Wachuma (San Pedro) Ceremony

The Wachuma / San Pedro ceremony begins in a sacred and natural setting, guided by an experienced Andean shaman and supported by our team. This ceremony is traditionally associated with heart-opening, spiritual connection, emotional clarity, and a deeper relationship with Pachamama and the natural world.

15:00 – Flowering Ceremony

After the main ceremonial process, we perform a traditional flowering ceremony, a beautiful Andean ritual of blessing, gratitude, and energetic harmony. This ceremony helps participants close the experience with peace and spiritual balance.

15:30 – Pachamama Ceremony (Offering to Mother Earth)

We continue with a traditional offering to Pachamama (Mother Earth) as a sacred act of gratitude and respect. This ceremony helps complete the healing process and close the ceremonial journey in harmony.

16:30 – Integration Break with Snacks & Fruits

A gentle break to rest and nourish the body with snacks and fresh fruits. This is an important moment for grounding, reflection, and beginning the integration of your San Pedro experience.

17:00 – Return to the Retreat Center

After the ceremonies and integration break, we return to the center where you can continue resting in a peaceful environment.

19:00 – Dinner

A light dinner is served at the retreat center, allowing you to close the day calmly and continue your integration with rest and reflection.

San Pedro Dite

What to Eat Before Your Ceremony

Following an Ayahuasca diet helps your body stay safe, reduces discomfort (especially nausea), and supports a clearer, more stable experience. We recommend starting your dieta at least 3–7 days before your retreat (and continuing 1–2 days after, if possible).

Best foods to eat

Keep meals simple, clean, and light:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables

  • Rice, oats, quinoa, and other simple grains

  • Potatoes and sweet potatoes

  • Lentils, beans (in small amounts), and light soups

  • Plain chicken or fish (small portions, if you eat meat)

  • Eggs (if tolerated)

  • Nuts and seeds (small amounts)

  • Plenty of water and herbal teas (non-caffeinated)

Foods to avoid (3–7 days before)

These foods can increase side effects or interfere with the process:

  • Alcohol (avoid completely)

  • Pork and heavy red meat

  • Fried, greasy, or very spicy foods

  • Processed foods, fast food, and packaged snacks

  • Aged or fermented foods (aged cheese, cured meats, soy sauce, kombucha, kimchi, sauerkraut)

  • High-sugar foods and desserts

  • Excess salt

  • Caffeine and energy drinks (coffee, strong black tea, pre-workouts)

  • Recreational drugs (avoid completely)

The day before and the day of the ceremony

  • Eat light meals only (soups, rice, vegetables).

  • Avoid heavy food after the afternoon.

  • Many people do best with no solid food 6–8 hours before drinking Ayahuasca.

  • Stay hydrated, but don’t overdrink water right before the ceremony.

Medications & safety note (very important)

Some medications can be dangerous with Ayahuasca—especially antidepressants (SSRIs/SNRIs/MAOIs) and other psychiatric medications. If you take any prescription medication, tell us in advance so we can guide you safely. Never stop medication abruptly without medical advice.

Lifestyle recommendations

For a smoother experience, we also recommend avoiding:

  • Sexual activity (24–48 hours before)

  • Intense partying, lack of sleep, or heavy stress

  • Violent or highly stimulating media right before the retreat

If you want, paste your retreat rules (or your current draft) and I’ll convert this into a clean “Diet & Preparation” section that matches your exact website tone.

Accommodation

The Ayaterra center is nestled in the Sacred Valley of Cusco, an hour and 30 minutes away by car from the main square of Cusco. In a fertile valley located at 2980m/9776ft, within reach of major facilities in the city of Urubamba. The Sacred Valley of the Inca provides the participant a better place to aclimate to the altitude, warm nice weather for most of the year, with plenty of space to make nature walking, meditate, and explore the area while you are staying with us. The Ayaterra center is surrounded by lush mountains, natural creeks, forest and rolling hills – the perfect place to stay away from the hustle of the city. As for our facilities, actually, there is a Maloka where we perform the Ayahuasca ceremonies, a kitchen area, shower with hot water, a lobby area, and for lodging, we have rooms for twin accommodation and shared rooms for more than three people available.

Information & FAQs About San Pedro (Wachuma)

What is the difference between Ayahuasca and San Pedro (Wachuma)?

Both are sacred plant medicines used in traditional ceremonies in Peru, but they come from different regions and are known for different types of experiences.

Ayahuasca

Ayahuasca is an Amazonian brew traditionally prepared with plants such as Banisteriopsis caapi and chacruna (Psychotria viridis). Ceremonial experiences are often described as deeply introspective, emotionally intense, and vision-oriented, and they typically last several hours.

San Pedro (Wachuma)

San Pedro (Wachuma) is an Andean cactus (Echinopsis pachanoi) traditionally used in ceremonies focused on heart-opening, nature connection, emotional clarity, and spiritual grounding. The experience is often described as more expansive, gentle, and connected to the natural environment, and it may last longer than Ayahuasca.

  • Key difference (simple):
Ayahuasca = Amazon / deep introspection
  • San Pedro = Andes / heart-opening & connection with Pachamama

Is San Pedro hallucinogenic?

Yes. San Pedro is considered psychoactive and can alter perception, intensify the senses, and produce visionary or symbolic experiences. The intensity varies by person, preparation, and ceremonial context.

Is San Pedro illegal in the United States?

The San Pedro cactus is generally legal to buy, sell, and grow as an ornamental plant in the U.S. However, mescaline (the main psychoactive compound) is regulated under U.S. federal law as a controlled substance, so extraction/consumption may be illegal depending on the context and jurisdiction. DEA sources list mescaline among controlled substances.

Note: Laws can vary by state/local jurisdiction. This is general information, not legal advice.

Is San Pedro legal in Peru?

San Pedro (Wachuma) has a long-standing traditional use in Peru, especially in Andean ceremonial contexts. Peru’s Ministry of Culture has publicly recognized the traditional knowledge and uses of the San Pedro cactus as part of the nation’s cultural heritage.

Is San Pedro addictive?

San Pedro is not generally associated with compulsive use or physical dependence in traditional ceremonial settings. Most participants experience it as part of guided spiritual or healing work rather than recreational use.

What are the potential benefits of a San Pedro ceremony?

Participants often seek San Pedro (Wachuma) for:

  • Emotional release and inner clarity

  • Spiritual reflection and self-discovery

  • A deeper connection with nature and Pachamama

  • Greater gratitude, compassion, and perspective

  • Support in processing grief, life transitions, or emotional blockages

Experiences vary from person to person, and results are not guaranteed.

How do I prepare for a San Pedro ceremony?

A respectful preparation can make the experience smoother and more meaningful.

Recommended preparation:

  • Eat light meals before the ceremony

  • Avoid alcohol and recreational drugs

  • Get good sleep the night before

  • Stay hydrated (without overdrinking right before the ceremony)

  • Come with a clear intention and an open, respectful mindset

Your retreat center may also provide a specific preparation guide.

What should I wear to a San Pedro ceremony?

Wear comfortable clothing suitable for a full day in nature.

Recommended clothing:

  • Loose, breathable layers

  • Warm layers for changing weather (especially in the Andes)

  • Comfortable walking shoes

  • Natural fabrics (cotton/wool) if possible

  • Neutral or earthy tones (optional, but often preferred in ceremonial settings)

How do you care for a San Pedro cactus (the plant)?

If you mean the plant itself, basic care includes:

  • Plenty of sunlight

  • Well-drained cactus/succulent soil

  • Light watering (avoid overwatering)

  • Protection from frost and prolonged heavy rain

Is a San Pedro ceremony worth it?

For many people, yes—especially those seeking emotional clarity, spiritual connection, and a deeper relationship with nature. Participants often describe the experience as meaningful, heart-opening, and transformative. That said, it requires respect, proper guidance, and personal readiness. It is not the right path for everyone.
